KONSEP TASAMUH DALAM MODERASI BERAGAMA DI KAMPUS ISLAM SWASTA KALIMANTAN SELATAN DAN TENGAH (ANALISIS TEORI PLURALISME AGAMA)

This study examines the concept of tasamuh (tolerance) within the framework of religious moderation in Islamic higher education institutions in South and Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, through the lens of religious pluralism theory. The emergence of religious moderation as a national policy was initially intended to counteract radicalism and exclusivism in religious practices. However, the implementation of this concept requires critical attention to avoid the extremes of liberalism or syncretism. Employing a qualitative approach, this research utilized purposive sampling to involve key stakeholders academic leaders, faculty members, and students from three Islamic colleges: STAI Al-Jami Banjarmasin, STAI Ma’arif Buntok, and STAI Al-Wasliyah Barabai. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman framework. Findings indicate that each institution integrates tasamuh differently. STAI Al-Jami Banjarmasin promotes cultural accommodation and curriculum development to harmonize Islamic values with local traditions. STAI Ma’arif Buntok fosters pluralistic interaction among diverse ethnic and religious groups, emphasizing coexistence and dialogue. Meanwhile, STAI Al-Wasliyah Barabai highlights tasamuh within Islamic education by embedding tolerance values into formal learning and community engagement programs. These practices demonstrate that tasamuh serves not only as a theological principle but also as a practical tool for nurturing inclusive, peaceful, and socially responsible graduates. In conclusion, religious moderation when grounded in tasamuh is vital for strengthening interreligious harmony in Indonesia’s plural society. Nevertheless, it must be applied proportionally to prevent both radical exclusivism and excessive liberalism, ensuring its role as a balanced approach to faith, culture, and education.
